Trade Unionist and Socialist Coaliton Election Rally

Thursday April 15th 7.30 pm-10.30 pm
Mechanics Institute, 103 Princess Street

Mark Serwotka, general secretary of the Public and Commercial Services Union, received a standing ovation when he last spoke in the region at the National Union of Teachers Conference at Easter. “If we don’t work  very closely together in the difficult months ahead, we will find it very difficult to hold on to our jobs, our pensions and conditions of service”. said Mark Serwotka. He called on public sector workers to
‘join forces to fight cuts to jobs or services’.

Civil Servants, Teachers, BA Cabin Crew, Rail Workers, have all recently shown they are prepared to take strike action to defend there services, their jobs, pay and pensions. With all the three main parties promising deep public sector cuts after the Election, a confrontation with the trades unions, possibly an a scale seen in Greece, is likely.

Karen Reissmann, has been a nurse and a trade union activist in Manchester for 28 years. Two years ago she spoke out against cuts and privatisation in the NHS. Despite a massive strike she was sacked. She is now back working in the NHS. The Rail Workers and Fire Fighters Unions have already given Karen official support. Karen is one of the best known trade unionists in the City.

Nurse Karen is standing for parliament in the general election in the Manchester Gorton Ward. She is a PPC for the Trades Unionists and Socialists Coalition. In Salford David Henry, for the Hazel Must Go! Campaign also is standing under as part of the TUSC

‘Cuts of £950 million to Manchester NHS budget and 750 jobs to go at Salford Hope hospital –  and this is before the election!’ said Karen at a street meeting on Manchester’s Market St last Saturday. ‘People say they agree with our “No cuts – make the bankers pay” demand.’ says Karen. ‘People do not see why we must take the cuts, while the banker take the cash. They caused the problems not us’.
